With years of experience working specifically on residential projects across Salt Lake County, Utah County, and Davis County. We've tiled simple subway tile bathrooms and complex large-format porcelain floors and everything in-between.
Tile work is one of the most visible parts of any kitchen or bathroom project. It's also one of the most unforgiving — out-of-level tiles, inconsistent grout joints, corners that don't align, and lippage between large-format tiles all show up immediately and are expensive to redo. Apogee Builder Group has tile installers with years of experience working specifically on residential projects across Salt Lake County, Utah County, and Davis County. We've tiled simple subway tile bathrooms and complex large-format porcelain floors and everything in-between.
Shower Tile Installation
Shower tile is where craftsmanship really matters. The substrate has to be right — cement board or a waterproof membrane system like Schluter Kerdi. The waterproofing has to be complete before a single tile goes up. Then the layout has to be planned so cuts fall in the right places and patterns align correctly. We do walk-in showers, tub surrounds, steam showers, and custom niches. We've tiled showers in East Bench homes with high-end large-format porcelain and classic 3x6 subway tile bathrooms in Sugar House bungalows.
Bathroom Floor Tile
Bathroom floor tile in Utah needs to handle moisture, temperature changes, and traffic. We install porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone floor tile over properly leveled and prepared substrates. We also do heated floor systems under tile — a popular upgrade in master bathrooms across the Salt Lake Valley.
Kitchen Backsplash Tile Installation
A kitchen backsplash tile is often the design focal point of the whole kitchen. We install subway tile, mosaic glass tile, handmade ceramic tile, large-format porcelain, and natural stone. The backsplash goes in after countertops are set and we plan the layout carefully around outlets, windows, and focal points.
Floor Tile Installation
Entryway tile, kitchen floor tile, laundry room tile — floor tile throughout the home. Large-format tiles (24x24 and larger) are popular right now and require a very flat substrate. We use self-leveling underlayment when the subfloor isn't level enough for large tiles, which is the correct way to handle it rather than skipping prep and hoping for the best.
Exterior Tile and Pavers
Covered porch tile, outdoor kitchen surfaces, and patio pavers are all projects we do. Exterior tile in Utah needs to be rated for freeze-thaw cycling — not all tile is. We select materials appropriate for outdoor use in a Utah climate and install them with the proper setting materials for exterior applications.
Tile Installation in Older Utah Homes
Older homes in Millcreek, Murray, Holladay, and the Avenues present specific tile installation challenges — out-of-plumb walls, uneven floors, old cast iron tubs with non-standard dimensions, and subfloor conditions that need attention before tile goes down. We've worked in enough of these homes to know what to expect and how to handle it properly.
Tile installation in Utah typically costs $5–$17 per sq ft, with an average around $9 per sq ft depending on material and complexity.
Basic ceramic/porcelain: ~$6–$10 per sq ft
Showers & backsplashes: $15–$30+ per sq ft
Natural stone or custom work: $20+ per sq ft
What affects cost most: tile type, layout complexity, and surface prep (leveling, removal, waterproofing).
Most tile projects do NOT require a permit if they are cosmetic (floors, backsplashes, showers).
You may need a permit if:
Structural changes are involved
Plumbing or electrical work is included
It’s part of a larger remodel project
Best practice: Check with your local city if your project goes beyond simple tile replacement.
Most tile projects take 1–5 days, depending on size and complexity.
Small areas (backsplash): 1–2 days
Bathrooms or floors: 2–4 days
Large or custom projects: 1+ week
Important: Drying time (thinset and grout) and prep work can extend timelines.
